I suspect that most of the new members come from the rhodes22.com link =
page, frankly is hard to spot sailnets lists their site is focused more =
on the store. If you are a "old-timer" you know, but a new person would =
be hard pressed.

The link idea is a good one :-) I should have thought of it :-) the =
problem is mime is a pain-in-the-ass, the day job is eating cycles right =
now, I get to it soon(weekend maybe). For now the max size is 128k after =
that it needs approval, should be ok to dailup at that size. I also need =
to "demine" and "dehtml" the stuff for the archive and dijest, got a =
script for that but need to drop it in :-)

BTW rhodes22.org could use a home page. :-)

PS. ps people I will not cross post for long and you are missing stuff =
already :-)

I have worked closely with MJM in the past (setting up the photo =
site), and have complete confidence that this will be a superior list.

I do have 2 concerns, though.
  1) The sailnet list probably gets more traffic from 'casual' browsers. =
How will new members find the new list? One possibility... I'll =
probably stay subscribed to both. If a few others do the same, we can =
point people in the right direction.
  2) I like the ability to send attachments, but there should be a size =
limit. Some of us are still on a dial-up connection. 60k or so should =
be more than sufficient for a photo, and exceptions can be made on a =
case-by-case basis, based on expressed desire from list members. A =
future enhancement would be for MJM to dump all attachments into a =
directory and substitute with an URL pointing to it. That way we could =
put just about anything up there and not bog down e-mail downloads. =
(how do you like that Michael? We're already writing requirements for =
release 2.0! ;^)

  Just a couple of thoughts.

  --Doug

ps: OK, Michael. Maybe its time we work on the photo site again?

    YES!

Michael's new system works better than any system we have used =
before. =20

It is very very fast. =20

    We can send attachments.

    No ads. No spam.

We can direct people to Rummy's list, Tom's FAQ, and various picture =
sites maintained by others.

We can write our own rules for what is appropriate for our list.

We can maintain our list so we don't have to rebuild it if the =
service provider loses or changes its service.

Michael has done an incredible job in a short period of time. (This =
is standard procedure for MJM.) Someone has helped him proofread his =
work. Thanks to that person or persons.

Click on the link & sign up:

    http://www.rhodes22.org/mailman/listinfo/rhodes22-list=20

Make suggestions about how Michael can improve the way it works, the =
wording, etc.

    This is truly our list.

I'm sure most of us will stay on the Sailnet list as well, but once =
you've seen the speed of a list working the way it should, you will find =
it difficult to go back to snail email.

Some people might have noticed some Strange messages on the list =
here what is happening.

Well everyone, we know what happen last weekend, the sailnet list =
took a hit. Not liking the list being down I set up a new listserver =
under http://www.rhodes22.org/mailman/listinfo/rhodes22-list .=20

1)It is a commercial grade server controlled by us
2)It is fast, message turnaround is under 1 minute, I make sure it =
stays that way(sailnet seems to be 2 hours)
      3)attachment are ok(we control it)
4)The footer lines are for the list benefit, not to sell ad space
5)when people sign up they get the rhodes22 charter
6)The archive system is useable, bet even that will be improved
7)The control screen are simple and understandable
8)We control it to make it fit your needs

Well at this point I built it, it is open to all comers, are we =
ready for it?
