[Rhodes22-list] rope loop

When I purchased my used boat among the misc. items under the sink was a
loop of hemp rope.  The braided rope is thick (2") making a loop (6" in
dia.) banded together by a thin steel ring with the two ends frayed.  I am
at a loss as to what the purpose of this rope loop is for.  Would it be
nothing but a novelty item or does it have a meaningful purpose?  Does
anyone have any idea what this is for?  Thank you, Richard Day
