Interestingly enough a great deal of experimentation and experience along
the lines of this issue can be obtained from the model aircraft lists.  It
turns out that a properly geared and propped electric motor will outperform
it's internal combustion competition.  It's a matter of properly coupling
the power the propeller.

I am sure that many here remember the English Seagull outboard.  These
engines became legendary because they coupled their output to the prop/water
interface so efficiently.
