Mary Lou,

I'm sure Tom will chime in when he gets the chance, but I think I know
the answer to this one...

Our boats are masthead rigs, and the halyard sheeves are in line with the
forestay. Especially if you have a CDI flexible furler, which has a wide
fitting at the top of the foil for the genoa halyard, you will likely have a
problem with the UPS halyard wrapping around the genoa furler if you don't
hold it out of the way. The halyard restrainer guides the UPS halyard down
the mast a few inches (don't know how many) so that it won't catch on the
genoa furler and get wrapped up inside it. I would think that the halyard
restrainer is absolutely necessary. If you don't get one the first season,
I bet you'll install one over the first winter!

ps: sorry I still haven't had a chance to post Tom's pictures. Sounds like
the ones he is sending to Mark will be a lot more informative, anyway!

Subject: Question Re: [Rhodes22-list] u p s sail revisited

Just catching up on lots of email I've been away and Fred and I are leaving
again for a few days but thought I'd ask this question now.

Tom, what's the purpose of the halyard restrainer? When I mentioned it to
Paul Beaudin from Doyle he looked puzzled and said he didn't think it would
be needed and in fact might be detrimental to the operation of the sail.
What are we talking about - is it necessary?
