Its not practical to read detailed articles on every brand and model on the
market so a good place to start is the NEW GPS USERS READ THIS article

which gives a brief explination of the features of the different Garmin,
Magellan, and Lowrance models.
Then, once you have the shopping list narrowed down to a few models, you can
find a specific detailed article about those models, to help make the buying
decision.

If you can't find a car dealer giving GPS receivers away, my first Garmin
GPS II+ is at the bottom of Alum Creek Lake, which you are welcome to have
if you can find it :)
