Re: [Rhodes22-list] web site suggestion/offerI presume when you say, =
"Roger running with his kite", you mean Dynamic Equilibrium sailing =
downwind while flying its tri-radial spinnaker? While many of you =
probably wish I would "go fly a kite", I haven't actually messed around =
with a paper & string kite since I was about 8 or 9 years old.

In principle, I have no objection to this plan. However, I just don't =
have time to put something like that together. There's a lot more =
involved in producing an instructional video than simply taping a =
session on the boat.

As an alternative, may I suggest the instructional video series from =
SAIL magazine:

    SAIL Videos
    P.O. Box 385070
    Minneapolis, MN 55438
    800-828-8130
    612-831-7272 (FAX)

They have instructional videos on all facets of sailing from basic boat =
handling to advanced mainsail & genoa trimming, to spinnaker sailing, & =
even racing techniques. These videos are professionally produced & =
edited. Most are narrated by sailing legend, Tom Whidden. Tom can do & =
explain this stuff better than I ever could, even if I live to be 100 =
years old!

Another good source of instructional sailing videos is:

    Bennett Marine Video
    730 Washington St.
    Marina Del Rey, CA 90292
    310-821-3329

Finally, NORTH Sails produces a series of sailing tutorial classes with =
names like:

    The NORTH U. Cruising Course
    The NORTH U. Fast Course
    The NORTH U. Smart Course

These books are meant to be used as the textbooks for 1 -2 day seminars =
which NORTH Sails puts on periodically all over the country. I =
recommend these courses highly. But, even if you don't attend the =
seminars, the textbooks are highly readable with exercises for you to go =
out & try on your own boat. (Cool homework, dude!)

In addition, NORTH Sails has produced a series of instructional videos =
called "The Shape Of Speed". This series has videos specifically about =
trimming mainsails, another for genoas, & a 3rd for spinnakers. The =
close-up photography & explanations are some of the best I've seen on =
these subjects.

Any NORTH Sails loft should have these textbooks & videos for sale. The =
address of the Detroit NORTH Sails loft is:

    NORTH Sails Detroit
    22600 Greater Mack Ave.
    St. Clair Shores, MI 48080
    810-776-1330
    810-776-2762 (FAX)
    www.northsailsdetroit.com

Good luck!

      MJM and other web gurus,

Just a suggestion/question for the web site - how about video?

Some things are easier to see and understand in motion with =
commentary. =20

I was struck by that while watching the old Rhodes slide show =
video. While good, and entertaining, the parts about launching and =
recovery, mast raising, etc. would be improved with video vs.. slides.

FWIW I have a digital video camera. The editing package that came =
with it is apparently capable of producing videos in RealPlayer format =
for either dialup or broadband connection. It has other formats too, I =
just don't yet understand what they are.

This is of limited usefulness right now, since I don't have my =
boat, and don't expect delivery until spring, but I would be happy to do =
something then.
