[Rhodes22-list] lazaret water

Kip,

I own a 1974 Continental. Strange as it may seem there are many of small differences between the 1974's and.....say...a 1976, which is the next closest year to mine that I have seen.

ie:
No v-berth floatation, no seat drains, no removable cap on the centerboard trunk, single point tangs where the lower shrouds attach to the mast, external access to the centerboard pivot shaft, and the centerboard does not fully retract into the keel(it sticks out about two inches when up fully). The floatation and seat drains may have been owner specified when built?? So while my boat had seven or eight years of leaf litter in the cockpit when I got her, the laz was pretty much dry. My seat drains are a couple of 3/8" in the seat gutters and into the cockpit near the companionway. If I can find through hull fittings with a low profile, I will install them in the aft corner pockets like most have and tee the lines into the cockpit drain line.

I did fix one major leak that was filling the bilge after a rainy day, where the centerboard pennant came through into the gutter by the companionway, by replacing the hose and adding a through hull fitting. I also had water in the area under the cockpit where the rear floatation is when the cockpit filled after it rained and the cockpit drain clogged. The O-ring in the access plate dried out allowing the water to enter. On my boat, this area is separated from the bilge by the 3/4" plywood aft bulkhead of the cabin, and most of the water eventually ended up in the bilge too.

I spent Saturday working on water leaks, and I will probably end up resealing and rebedding everything on the boat. Good luck to all with your leaks, and I enjoy the bilge pump or not to bilge pump discussions.

Todd

P.S. Randy (and Doug), thanks for the tour. I got a few great ideas!!
