Fw: [Rhodes22-list] Getaway's new home

Rob,

Welcome to the list. I was faced with the same problem a little over a year
ago when I purchased my Rhodes 22. The boat was on a trailer without brakes
in WI and I live in TN. Most of the states I needed to go through require
brakes at 3000 or 3500 pounds. I really worried about this but other than
brakes the trailer was supposed to be in great shape with new bearings and
working lights.

I decided to go for it and drove the boat 810 miles without any problems at
all. I have a 94 S10 Blazer with towing package; tongue weight was perfect
and it towed at highway speeds just fine. More importantly I never felt like
I was driving unsafely or at risk. I gave plenty of following distance. My
brakes are in tiptop shape. That being said I haven’t used the trailer
since.

I am not recommending that you do this, just letting you now that it can be
done safely if your tow vehicle and trailer are both rated for the load and
in sound shape.

My boat stay sin the water year round so upgrading the trailer has been a
low priority. I haven’t figured out what kind of brakes to get. I will be
interested to here what you do.

Good luck!

Wally, Knoxville TN
