Wally, You do need a boom vang for sail shape for anything from a beam reach 
on down.  I have a standard main and it gets a lot of twist on anything more 
than a close reach.  Congrats on the Yaaaaaaaaaaaacht Club ! Hopefully the 
fee includes a few parties.   My entry fee was 30$ and includes about 8 
parties.  We are not as exclusive in MO.  Also you will want a wisker pole 
for the downwind leg.  Good luck - Make us proud - don't lower our PHRF 
though.  Got a 325 this year.  I can run the course the next day and still 
have a shot at winning :)
