I talked to Stan and he was very kind and explained how to rig the GBI Furler with a new head stay. I am letting McCotters Marina build the head stay. The Plastic fittings in the Furling tube seem OK.

If all goes well, I will be sailing next weekend.

BTW.

Based on the pictures from you guys, I purchased 6 ft of 1-1/2 EMT aluminum tubing for a jin pole. I used my spare jib sheet which has a 2 to 1 purchase and lowered the mast onto my home made mast crutch. Add some misc wood, etc. and the lowering of the mast went very smooth.

Bob,
It is good to see someone else in the southeast on the list
besides Rummy. Are you back on the water?

Bob,
Since my headstay broke at the fitting, I did not have to drill out the
bushings on the furler. But a new headstay can be made by putting the
wire
through the furler before attaching the fitting. That would be best.
The
second (or maybe third) problem I had was that the new fitting was
slightly
smaller than the old one, so the drum slid right down to the bottom,
just as
you stated. Rummy to the rescue-he manufactured a plastic fitting that
goes
on the wire between the furler and fitting that keeps the furler up
where it
is supposed to stay. It is really a plastic bushing that screws
together
around the wire and it works perfectly. I think he is making and
selling
these for some price ($50? - which includes his designing and
engineering
work)...

Hope that helps.
