I don't have a rubber maid container. My tank is opaque and you can see the 
water line easy. I never add more than about 5 gallons for a couple of 
reasons. I bring water to the boat from home in a five gallon container 
because I don't want to use the marina water. It takes me about a month or 
so to use it up. I just use it for washing up and coffee.
