[Rhodes22-list] Still Looking

Bob,

There are Island Packet owners on the list. The Island Packet is very
different from the Rhodes, and more suitable if you plan to sail primarily
on the ocean side of LBI. The Rhodes is probably better if you want to sail
in the bay. The Island Packet is too heavy for even full size pickup
trucks, and too wide to trailer without permits.

I can't speak to the paint issue, I'm sure others will.

Any recycled Rhodes is potentially a good deal. How much?

The lack of swivel seats would be a deal breaker for me. There is nothing
that is more used on my boat. I have overheard people on boats costing 10
times the price of the Rhodes say to each other "Boy, I wish we had seats
like that..." The problem is, it's not that easy.

The seats work best if the rail bumps out around the spot where you sit. If
the seats are not factory installed, you've got to make, or buy from Stan
and have installed, the custom stern railing. This will turn a good deal
into a not so good deal.

I would go for the July recycled boat with the knowledge that Stan probably
won't be able to make the promised delivery date, but that you will get a
far far better boat than you can get any other way. There are several
R-22s on LBI, and many people who will probably be happy to teach you the
ropes while you're waiting.

Depending on the price of the recycled boat, I might consider buying it and
using it until my own boat was ready, and selling it or trading it in to
Stan when a boat was built to my exact specifications.

I have always thought there could be a very good business and a pleasant
life style in renting Rhodes sailboats on LBI in the Summer, and then towing
them down to Biscayne Bay for the winter and doing the same thing.

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Still Looking

Hello,
I looked at 2 boats today, a 1990 Rhodes 22 and a 1982 Island Packet 26.
I need some help please.

Stan suggested a July delivery for a recycled from him so I'm looking at
what's out there.

The Rhodes was purchased as a recycled from General Boats 3 years ago and is
in great condition except for some scratches on the painted blue hull.

Is getting this repainted going to be a problem?
Will the color match when repaired?

The roller furler has the aluminum tube. Is this the old style and can I
expect problems with this? The owner wasn't sure of the brand and I
couldn't see any name on the unit.

If I add a bimini and swivel seats the boat will have all I need at the
moment. What is involved with the seat installation or should I have a shop
do the install?

And... any opinions on the Island Packet?

Thanks
Bob in Manahawkin
