Hi Ed,

I was just catching up on last week's list and noticed you got some
suggestions to use a drain stopper to quiet the noise.  Instead, you
ought
to use a door stopper.

I noticed my boat produced a noise on a light air day when the cockpit
was
filled with porky in-laws.  And when my 300 pound brother-in-law
insisted on
steering, water sometimes backed up through the drain so an inch or two
covered the cockpit deck.  With the gurgling sound and water coming in,
they
would think the boat was sinking and wanted to quickly get off.

So I took a rubber door stopper and epoxied it to the bottom of the hull
just forward of the drain hole.  The thick end of the stopper is at the
edge
of the hole and the stopper tapers forward.  With just the slightest
forward
motion of the boat, the door stopper placement creates a vacuum in the
hole
which prevents any water from going up the drain hose.  No noise, no
water
up the drain.

Now the in-laws fearlessly pile in and take over for long, endless
sails.
