There is some question regarding the chains relative importance in
flattening the rode angle and  thereby increasing holding power or does it
better serve as a chafe protector.

In general the longer the better.  The West Marine catalog discusses the
matter at length.

For what it's worth dedicated cruisers frequently use all chain rodes.  It's
really a matter of usage... five or six feet is fine for hanging out during
the day.  Length (and weight) increases according to the intended usage.  As
always moderation.

Apply common sense.  I have 20 feet (fine for overnight in protected
waters.)
