[Rhodes22-list] Mast Lowering, well raising actually - read it backwards

I, like my namesake in Ct. have raised and lowered the IMF mast with only
one other person (albeit male). In fact I've done it at least as many times
with one helper, as two.

I raise my mast from the bow. I'm able to get it into the tabernacle by
myself by loosely tying a line around it at the bow pulpit and at the cabin
top grab rails. I do have to retie once or twice to get around the
spreaders while I'm walking the mast forward. The ties on the cabin top
become critical once there is more of the mast forward of the bow pulpit
than aft. The line is the only thing that keeps the mast from see sawing to
the ground. Once I have the foot of the mast bolted into the tabernacle. I
get rid of the lines, and connect the lower forward stays and shrouds.
Important to remember to run the shrouds outside and not through the
lifelines. I've learned the hard way. I also keep the boom bungeed to the
mast, where I'll be able to reach the bungee when the mast is up.

If my helper is not regular crew, just some kind hearted soul I've recruited
(bribed) from the ramp area, I only need their help for less than 5 minutes

The key is to have the shrouds and forward lower stays attached to the chain
plates, and the boat on the trailer with the bow a little high. We throw
the mast up quickly, and then gravity keeps it trying to fall to the stern,
while the lower forwards prevent it from doing so, and the shrouds keep it
centered. The helper keeps hands on the mast just to make sure it can't
come back forward, while I attach the lower aft stays and back stay. The
helper is done, and I attach the head stay with the furler at my own pace.

Lowering is exactly the reverse.

Rob,

Sorry about the dropped mast. That's what happens when you get the wenches
involved. 8-) Sorry, girls, I couldn't pass that one up. 8-) The winch
on my GB crane will not spin if you let it go. That would be quite a
hazard--even for a knave.
