[Rhodes22-list] Tn River Cruise

Rummy,

Well this part of the TN is not like KY Lake but parts of it are wide enough
for sailing. Unfortunately most of the wide areas are way down river from
Knoxville and my house. This is why I don't keep my boat at the Concord
Yacht Club 2 miles from my house. I do sail my Bantam on Concord lake but it
is not enough water for the R22. There are many boats 22 feet or larger on
Concord Lake but I enjoy the bigger and cleaner part of the TN down river. I
actually drive 40 miles each way to get to my slip.

So how wide is the river ... the first 25 or so miles upriver (and 17 miles
downriver) are at least a mile wide with many areas 2 plus miles wide. The
river is deep in this area and you can almost sail bank to bank. Many
channel markers are actually on the river banks. The next 25 or so miles are
pretty narrow and I most likely will be motoring unless the wind is very
cooperative. Once you lock up at Fort Loudon Dam the river widens again and
there is a canal that connects the TN to the Tellico. This area is a couple
of miles across but is surrounded by foothills so the wind is spotty. After
Fort Loudon Lake the TN narrows again and I will be motoring the last 20
miles or so.

If the winds are normal I should be able to sail at least 50 to 60% of the
120 miles. We get plenty of practice tacking and jibing when river sailing.
I know some people hate to motor cruise but at least when river cruising the
scenery is close and always changing. If it is cool out I don't mind motor
cruising, it still beats staying home!

Wally
