[Rhodes22-list] Attention Jay

Rik,
Thanks for covering for me, you got my drift. Did I scare "razz" away?

Went to North U. (North Sails) cruising seminar today in Annapolis, led
by John Rousmaniere. Based on much of the expertise here on the list, I
could have saved some $.

Actually, it was a great package of info and resources for me planning
some ocean-going trips this year. Both heavy-weather sailing and
handling surf/waves, as well as cruising spinnakers, were the hot
topics for me. There was a lot of discussion on loose-footed sails,
handling furling mains, and single-handing ability all as safety and
control issues, then what we view on the Rhodes as strictly convenience
features.

An example was reefing for a squall must be well under 2 minutes, which
was far from the norm of the 86 attendees. Being able to do it from the
cockpit is a plus, especially with our first reef of dropping the IMF
to the lower position. Avoiding stress points when reefed was an
additional plus here.

Learning how to avoid broaching in coming to shore in heavy surf, it
was recommended to furl the gennie and make the bow light, rather than
reef both sails for balance. Using the main with traveler to keep a
low CE (Roger's original comments) and motor to control speed, until
you can sail ahead of waves. Once you've handled surf conditions, it's
the rogue waves tht are a secondary issue, but the primary threat (64
lbs. of pressure/cubic foot) against the transom.

All the safety considerations, except weight, are in the R22's
favor-stays, flaired hull, pos flotation, balance with reefed sails,
etc. That was all reassuring as they talked about larger boats and
significant trade-offs. The use of the cruising spinnaker was a strong
part of sail handling, although they don't have a UPS equivalent (the
guy sitting next to me traded his gennaker in for a UPS for his 31'
S&S?)

More comments and questions to follow.
Jay
