Rummy,

My wife & I have gone round & round on this one. Deb has her master's
degree in counseling & is a guidance counselor in the Beaverton Rural School
District. She really likes her job & is doing well there. My older son,
Daniel, just finished his 1st year at Northern Michigan University up in
Marquette, MI. He's majoring in Graphic Arts/Graphic Communications with an
emphasis on electronic imaging. NMU has an outstanding Graphic Arts Dept.
(100% graduate placement even in the current economy!) Daniel is doing well
& really likes the school & the area - UP of Michigan, Lake Superior,
wilderness camping, NMU has its own downhill ski area right off campus, snow
shoeing, kayaking, rated one of the top 10 places in the United States to
mountain bike, etc Heck, I wish I lived there! My younger son, Gary is
just finishing his sophomore year at Meridian High School here in Sanford,
MI. Of course, he has friends & doesn't want to move.

I don't want to have to uproot my family more than once. In Deb's line of
work, the school systems typically interview for replacement staff over the
spring & summer. Even if I started work very soon, this summer is probably
too soon to tell if my new position is really going to work out. Instead,
I'd probably move down immediately, take an apartment for a year, & we'd get
by as best we can until the summer of 2004. Then, if things look like
they're going to work out, we'd have Deb start interviewing in the area,
then find a house, & make the big move. This will be hard on our marriage &
father/son relationships, but what else can I do? After more than a year of
searching, there seems to be zero opportunities for chemical engineers in
this area with literally hundreds of talented people recently laid off by
Dow Chemical & Dow Corning.

Roger
