Rob! I have a 5 horsepower Mariner on my rhodes and there have been a few 
times when the wind was so strong the boat could not make forward progress even 
at full throtle. I had to tack slightly back and forth rather than going 
straight into the wind. The rest of the time a 5 horse engine is fine on a  lake. 
While I agree with the others on the list that a long shafted engine is best, I 
haven't figured out how to get it high enough out of the water so that it 
won't drag when I'm sailing.
