Jim:
Might be like the clock on the microwave, if power off for extended
time might need to be reset. And recalibrated.

Mine is in alternate location in the lazarette near centerline but clear of
the possible turbulence from the cockpit drain. It worked well enough last
year, but failed this year ( 0.0' and flashing) and I have not yet had the
time to figure out why. BTW, it is a Uniden depth only unit.

This has been a subject of discussion on a number of older threads. You
should be able to find a variety of opinions on the archive. My boat has the
older style porta-potty mounted just aft of the v berth. The "shoot
through" transducer is mounted in the area under the potty (along with a
through hole knotmeter that I never use). It is arranged so that the mount
is vertical and the area between the sensor and hull is filled with mineral
oil.
It works well in this location, although sailing on Lake Michigan I only use
it rarely.

I've purchased a transom mount transducer, and since the turbulence
there will interfere with the reading - and of course - provide mostly
"after the fact" information a "thru hull" is preferable.

I'm not going to cut a hole in the hull so I'll settle for "shoot thru
hull". I've learned that the Garmin transom mount I have offers
optional instruction for mounting as a "shoot thru".

I'm willing to try this approach. Has anyone determined where on the
hull a "shoot thru" works best?

Thanks in advance.
