After the fact, the differences might be hard to distinguish.

However, if the damage had been caused by free water & freeze/thaw cycles;
then, one would expect to find it at the lowest points, not high on the
centerboard trunk as Lou observes.

In order to have a sufficient volume of water which could freeze/thaw &
cause the amount of expansion/contraction required to do the damage to the
FRP laminate in the walls of the centerboard well, there would have to be a
fairly sizable void space filled with water.  Based upon the curvature I
observe in the photos, I estimate Lou would need to find a water-filled
cavity on the order of 500-1000 ml in volume.  Lou has not reported finding
such a cavity or closely spaced cluster of smaller cavities as yet.   Of
course, if he does find void space inside the cement & the boat has gone
thru freeze/thaw cycles; then, game over.  In that case, the damage is
almost certainly due to ice.0
