[Rhodes22-list] R22 rating

Andy,

Congratulations on your victory! And thanks for upholding the racing honor
of all your fellow Rhodies. Isn't racing fun?

US Sailing lists the Rhodes Continental with a Portsmouth handicap of 98.0
(D-PN). http://www.ussailing.org/portsmouth/tables03/tables03off-3.htm The
various Beaufort Scale ranges for R22 are left blank in the table,
indicating that US Sailing has not collected enough data on the R22 racing
against known one-design classes (Thistle is the benchmark) to establish
good Portsmouth ratings for those wind ranges.

Comparing the R22 D-PN (98.0) to that of my Tanzer 16 (97.5) , and also
knowing that an R22 would quickly leave a Tanzer 16 going upwind in any
breeze above 8, I think 98.0 is a conservative handicap the Rhodes. For
R22 racers, that is "a good thing".

Is your club racing with Portsmouth or PHRF? The R22 is of a medium size
that could be scored under both systems, but judging from the bigger boats
you mentioned (J33), it might be PHRF.
http://www.ussailing.org/phrf/what_is_phrf.htm

If it's PHRF, you would have to contact the local committee to learn how
they rated you. Further, if you win often, they will likely consider your
rating "wrong" and lower it - giving others a better chance. I seem to
recall PHRF ratings ranging from 258 to 275 for R22 - but it's entirely up
to the local committee.

My R22 "Phoenix" is a project boat on shoring supports waiting warmer
weather to begin renovations. I race a Tanzer 16 from April to October and
frostbite a Starwind 19 keel/cb (see picture below). Last Saturday we took
the Starwind club racing in Greensboro and had similar conditions to those
you describe (perfect winter sailing for those with the right clothing).
Unfortunately, the sailors voted against going out that day - too many
centerboard voters.

It sounds like you had a great day, though!

PT
