I do not believe that salt water has much. or any effect on the life of the
water pump impeller (which is what we are discussing.)

What does wear them out is silt in the water.  It acts as an abrasive and
destroys the plastic part very rapidly.

If you are sailing in clear water there is no reason to change the thing at
all.  On the other hand if your sailing location is cursed with muddy
discolored water then changing the impellor on a yearly basis makes perfect
sense.

Keep an eye on the water stream being pumped out of the power-head.  If it's
declining in volume replace the impeller at once.
