Rob,

While you're evaluating outboard motors, don't forget to consider the propeller.  A sailboat needs good low speed torque ( 2 cycle is better for this, although 2 cycle does seem to be on the way out) and a low pitch prop - around 6" per revolution or so.  This will enable you to get a good "bite" at low rpm and move along nicely at speeds less than full throttle.  Also will help going against waves/wind.  High end speed is not really a factor in pushing a sailboat because of hull speed limits.

If you get a good deal on a motor, but find out later you need to buy a new prop - might not be such a good deal.
