Bryan,

Yes, you can remove the pedestal.  But, it's a royal PITA.  You could make
setting up to use the autopilot such an involved procedure that you won't
use the autopilot as much as you could.  The pedestal is not very big.  I
just step around it when I come aboard, just one more piuece of deck
hardware like a cleat or winch to avoid stepping on.
