[Rhodes22-list] Icebergs and Politics

Thanks, Mark,

It'll take me a while to go through this site. I'll ask when I need another fix.

Truly, the most interesting aspect of this list is the random selection. A couple of hundred people from all over the country with nothing in common except that they all own the same sailboat.

I am interested in, and learn from all of the stories, opinions, personal matters, politics, and yes, the sailing stuff, too. But I can't come back for just the sailing stuff day after day. (Although the recent Auto Tiller, and UPS discussions were both very valuable to me, and this is the only site where I can consistently learn new stuff about my boat.)

I found the recent "Fear Factor" discussion fascinating. I had no idea that people in the heartland were so viscerally afraid. In addition to our home in Greenwich, we have an apartment in NYC. Our doors are seldom locked when we are inside, and not always locked when we are not inside. We have not been robbed or assaulted or hassled in any way (except for kids who knocked down the Greenwich mailbox--a front page story in the local newspaper) in the 25 years we have lived in both locations.

I like living without fear. I like living in a country where the wealth is distributed widely enough so that everyone can live without fear. I think these are important values, worth discussing.

Dare I say it, I honestly believe these things are more important than sailboats. You are connected to a different loop of people than I am connected to. The sites you have posted are very valuable to me. I hope you will not back off. Others can hit the delete key.

Bill

But this is the last one I'm posting for a while - like many others on the
list, I actually prefer talking about sailing.....

Mark,

This picture is a fake. It's been around the Internet a couple of times.

Keep the web sites coming, though -- especially the political websites.

A lot of people think everything Steve says about anything other than
sailing is stupid, but I always defend his right to speak his mind.

How 'bout them Democrats?

I just received this from a friend and thought I'd pass it along. If you're
sailing your Rhodes around Newfoundland, just remember to be careful <g>.

This is too cool....
EVER SEE AN ICEBERG FROM TOP TO BOTTOM? This is awesome! This came from a
Rig Manager for Global Marine Drilling in St. Johns, Newfoundland. They
actually have to divert the path of these things away from the rig by towing
them with ships! In this particular case the water was calm & the sun was
almost directly overhead, so the diver was able to get into the water and
click this pic. Clear water huh?! They estimated the weight at 300,000,000
tons. Now we also know why the Titanic got into trouble!
