Doug,

You know I'm at least as lazy as the next person.  I've got a bilge pump on board.  It is simply not permanently mounted.  I have it on a cigarette lighter plug, and place it where needed.  I got one that will pump in very shallow water, and I use it when water accumulates.  But when I see how little it actually pumps, and how much trouble it has pumping up hill it makes me laugh when I read of people who think these little toys will make any difference at all in case of an emergency.

But to save me pumping! Hey.

  If you are just getting overflow from your tank vent and seepage from your
rubrail, I don't think a bilge pump is going to help you unless you put in a
well like Roger did.

You'd be better off venting your tank overboard like the new boats do and
re-bedding the rubrail so it doesn't leak.

Bill is correct when he says that a leak left for a long time would tend to
drain the battery.  That is, unless you are hooked to shore power.  Of
course, if you're hooked up to shore power and charging the battery for that
long, then you risk overcharging the battery and running IT dry (unless you
have a decent charge controller).

Bilge pumps like the one I installed will NOT empty the bilge enough for it
to dry out.  Mine won't even come on without a few inches of water in the
bilge.  Hardly worth having.  Of course, I didn't know that when I installed
it.  I keep it around because I keep thinking that there may be a time when
I need it.  I still might!

At any rate, I think it is a good idea to have a bilge pump in a boat. But
you shouldn't expect it to do very much for you.  If you want to keep the
bilge dry, you need to prevent water from getting in it, and then use a
sponge when it does.
