[Rhodes22-list] new to list & goodbye

I wonder, would this is ok in Franks option:

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of
patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
--Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Stephens Smith, November 13, 1787

"Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence, (I conjure you to believe
me fellow citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly
awake; since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of
the most baneful foes of Republican Government."
--George Washington, Farewell Address, September 19, 1796

"[I advocate] using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes [and] against
recalcitrant Arabs as an experiment. [I do not understand] the squeamishness
about the use of gas [...] We cannot in any circumstances acquiesce in the
non-utilisation of any weapons which are available to procure a speedy
termination of the disorder which prevails on the frontier."
--Winston Churchill, then Secretary of State at the British War Office,
authorising RAF Middle East Command to attack rebelling Iraqis with chemical
weapons, 1919

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank
God that such men lived."
 --General George S. Patton, Jr

"No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the
other poor dumb bastard die for his country."
--Attributed to General George Patton Jr

"We'll win this war, but we'll win it only by fighting and by showing the
Germans that we've got more guts than they have; or ever will have. We're
not going to just shoot the sons-of-b*tches, we're going to rip out their
living Godd*mned guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're
going to murder those lousy Hun c*cksuckers by the bushel-f*cking-basket.
War is a bloody, killing business. You've got to spill their blood, or they
will spill yours. Rip them up the belly. Shoot them in the guts. When shells
are hitting all around you and you wipe the dirt off your face and realize
that instead of dirt it's the blood and guts of what once was your best
friend beside you, you'll know what to do!"
 --George S. Patton

Welcome to the Rhodes Mailing List. The Rhodes Sailboats Discussion
List is open to everyone with an interest in Rhodes Sailboats. It is an
automated discussion list where messages are copied to every list
member's mailbox. Traffic varies from one to 40 messages a day.

The list is maintained by rhodes22.org as a courtesy to Rhodes Sailboats
Fans worldwide. It is hoped that the list will promote discussion about
Rhodes Sailboats and provide members with a means of sharing their
interests and experiences.

CHARTER: rhodes22-list at rhodes22.org

The rhodes-list at sailnet.net group will be open to discussion of all
subjects specifically referring to Rhodes sailboats or Rhodes
sailors. The focus of this group includes, but is not limited
to:

* Encouraging the understanding and discussion of Rhodes sailboats or
Rhodes sailors, in the many ways people wish to define it.

* Acting as a source of information for Rhodes sailboats or Rhodes
sailors worldwide and for people planning to buy/sell/repair/learn
about Rhodes sailboats or Rhodes sailors.

* Providing a forum for the development and promotion Rhodes sailboats
or Rhodes sailors' culture, history, traditions and economy.

* Any other subject that might be found at a sailor's bar or the
Clubhouse Bar, Including Rhodes sailboats or Rhodes sailors' travels,
events, family, jokes, quotations, pets, etc.

* The level of discussion does not have to be fit for a child, but some
good taste is expected.

Binaries and Formatting:
The posting of encoded binaries (e.g. pictures, compressed files,
etc.) to rhodes-list at sailnet..net is not allowed, the list server will
remove
them. Please use mixed case when posting (Upper and lower case
letters), typing words in uppercase means you are
SHOUTING.

Quoting:
Place new material at the top of the post and quote what you are
replying to below. That makes it simple to find out what is being said.
You are encouraged to edit down the quoted material.

HTML mail:
Allot of the email programs (Netscape and outlook) that can send their email
with embedded HTML. Embedded HTML can cause some of the list members to
have trouble reading their mail due to "browser wars", not reading their
mail
with a web browser and double messages in digest mode.
Member are encouraged to set their programs to send "text" email.

Subject Line:
Please set or change the subject line to reflect the true subject of
the post. for example "Subject: anchors" might be turned into
"Subject: gastank was anchors". If a joke (or any questionable
material) is being posted please indicate it on the subject line, for
example "Subject: Monday's Humor (jokes)"

Netiquette:
Posts to the group are expected to be considerate of other readers.
Personal abuse, flames, and obscenities are *not* appreciated; but we
are sailors.......

Anonymous email:
It is expected that users will provide their name in the email and will
sign same. We like to know who we're talking to.

Social Interaction/Manners:
To a certain extent, the interaction is about what you would expect
in any informal social setting, for example, a bar. It is recommended
that you get to know people first and introduce yourself (about the same
social rules that you would use to meet any new group of people). There
is a high level of chitchat on the list, and what you might think is
insulting to a group or region might only be people kidding each other
after knowing them for years. As in any bar, the subjects of politics
and religion can lead to heated augments and bar fights. These might be
best avoided.

The need to participate:
It is recognized that a group is only whoever post to it, no more and
no less. We can only talk about what people post about. You earn
respect on the list by postings and trying to help each other, you can
not demand it. Most sailing topics we have talked about already,
We chit chat in the mean time waiting to answer questions or a new
subject/story. If you want to know something, please post it, the
more detail the better. If someone is trying to help you please answer
their reasonable questions. If you can help someone, again post it,
Try to repay the knowledge you gained.

To the new people on the list:

1. Each of us was once a new person on this list.

2. Each of us thought the questions we asked had never been asked before.

3. Each of us was somewhat offended to learn that the old people on the list had not remained as subscribers solely for chance to
answer, yet again, questions that had been patiently answered scores of times before.

4. Most of the questions asked by new people on the list have been answered, in detail, in the FAQ section created by a list member
who, if memory serves me right, no longer owns a Rhodes 22.

5. The old people on the list think of one another as old friends. There is a lot of pushing and shoving. Anyone is welcome to
join in.

6. One of the stabilizing old members of the list recently left, and we are looking to find the new voice of moderation. (Ed is a
possible candidate, although he may not be old enough.)

7. Michael, it's time to send out the charter.

Bill Effros

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] new to list & goodbye

Good morning.

I signed up for the list yesterday, and received my first digest today. Whew!

Like many, I thought the list would provide some helpful information, and it seems to. And like others, my impression is that most
of you seem to be generous and accomodating persons.

But I have to admit that I was stunned to read some of the comments posted on the site, regardless of cause. And when another
member expressed his concerns, it appears that he was told he hadn't been around long enough to post his opinion. Then he was told
he was violating the public trust by using his computer to send an email. Again, whew!

After some research, I am thinking of purchasing a Rhodes 22. It seems like a terrific boat. And after all, it is a boat that I'm
interested in.

On the other hand, life is short, and there is plenty to read during the course of the day, so I'll say goodbye and unsubscribe.
