[Rhodes22-list] East River

I note you say, "in any kind of vessal". I did it in a 15' Snipe. (Since
all other Snipes are 16', I hold the record for doing it in a 15' one.)
What is more, I did half the round trip without a motor. When I succumbed
to owning a motor and bought a 2 hp Evinrude along the way, it cut my
backward speed down about 2 knots. I had to grab onto a barge and share
supper with the innkeeper while waiting for Hell Gate to change her mind.
The lonely barge keeper did not want to see me go but I had read that all
good captains sail on the tide. The Circle Line did help. Bridge keepers
told me I had to wait for a Circle Line boat so I could go through when they
opened the bridge for one of them. In the dark water of night I elected to
go around the bow end of what appeared to me to be a giant battleship parked
across the East River - when a voice hollered out of the black, "Halt, who
goes there?" I had sailed into the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It took spotlights
dancing on water to get me out of there before the "commence firing" command
was given..

all from "The Mothers of My Affections" story that the New Yorker said they
would publish if I would change my name to Mailer.
