No time for this now.  On deadline for a book.  Took a few hours yesterday to hop onto my boat for the first time since it's been in the water owing to a commitment made a year ago that I couldn't duck.  Glorious day.  Sailed to Long Island and back.  Everything worked fine on the boat.  Picked up a couple going back on the launch from their much larger boat which they never got to use because the engine wouldn't start.

The dockmaster in Greenwich finally made his dream trip to Bermuda last year.  He reports it was the "trip from hell" and he'll never get suckered into something like that again.  

Have a friend who built a $500,000 boat to sail around the world.  Spent a year commissioning it.  He got as far as the Panama canal, decided it was stupid, turned around, came back home, and sold the boat.  At a substantial loss.

Another friend bought a new Pacific Seacraft 40, built for him the next boat after Nigel Calder's boat.  Electrical fire kept him off the water for a year and a half.  (I guess they didn't learn that much from Nigel.)

No one in Greenwich sails as much as I do except for one guy with a Hobie 16.  Almost everyone does more maintenance (except for the guy with the Hobie).

The worst room in a Motel 6 is more comfortable than the best room on any boat you can afford to own.  For one thing, you can take as long a shower as you want.

I got myself a Toyota Tundra truck to haul my boat.  Great truck.  I can move and launch my boat to any location faster than any sailboat can get to the same location.  But I find I never do it, because what I really want to do is sail, and that's what I choose to do, all the time.

Everyone I know who has gotten a larger boat than the Rhodes 22 has eventually sold it and moved back to a smaller boat--or they become so discouraged with sailing they stop sailing entirely.  No one with a larger boat has ever sailed more in the larger boat than they did in a smaller boat.  I know of no marriage problems solved by larger boats.

Winnebagos on the water are no more fun to sail than Winnabagos on land are fun to drive.

The Rhodes 22 is simply the perfect boat for me.  Maybe some day something will come along that's better.  But it won't be larger, it won't be more complicated, it won't be less fun to sail.

I'm with Mark on this. I'd hate to have to subscribe to 5 or 6 different 
lists to find out what my buds, the former Rhodies are up to. The Seaward 
RK 26 appears to be a logical move up from an R22, though it appears that 
36 & 37 footers are currently popular.

So here's a question for all the Rhodies out there, if you were to move up 
(over or down) - what would your next boat be and why? One of the main 
reasons we've stayed small is the ease of maintenance. We like having a 
boat on the Chesapeake that we can haul home for the winter. We've talked 
about retiring down near the Bay and that has brought consideration of a 
bigger boat. Right now I've been looking at Tartan 28s. Supposedly good 
sailing, Sparkman & Stevens design, nice deck layout (with the exception of 
the bridgedeck traveller which would take some getting used to), good 
cockpit, good engine access, good interior layout and some are even 
available tiller-steered. Seems like a nice boat for a couple who still 
would want to do a lot of daysailing but might want to take off on longer 
trips.

Anyone else want to take a stab at this?
