Jim,

Here is some information about some other machines used on
sailboats gleaned from other emails:

Comments on sewing sails from other emails:

"Used an older Bernina for a lot of it...was having a problem with a
bobbin part... traded it in on a new one since parts were getting up
there. got was not a high end 4000 stitch version but very good
basics.... went in and brought type material...sunbrella, webbing, heavy
upholstery....this one breezed through 4 layers of sunbrella and 2 layer
of 2 inch webbing....stock...he said change the needles around and it'll
do better. Did not scare him to try whatever... very happy...variable
zigzags etc. Unit ran around $500 with very good warranty...American
Sewing on Springhill in Mobile...has lots of used also."

"Mine is a Necchi, is very heavy which is good because the heavier
material requires that, and it sews zigzag. Cost 600.00 but feel I have
recouped

that with a few projects. Went back a few months after had bought it and
found a cabinet that fit it. I will sew through three to five layers of
sunbrella and plastic window film. "

"the Brute machine... has purchased Sailrite's machine accessories that
fit it."

As you can see, others are researching the same subject.
