Wally,

3/8" OD braided line is about the smallest you can go & have a line that can
be easily gripped with bare hands by most people. The standard clam cleats
work great with 3/8" OD line. Personally, I use New England Ropes Sta-Set X
yacht braid. Sta-Set X is a polyester (i.e. Dacron) braided line with less
stretch, greater abrasion resistance, and about the same "hand" than
standard polyester double braids. It's more stretchy & heavier (especially
when wet) than exotic lines like Vectran or Spectra. But, the costb of
Sta-Set X is only about 1/3X vs. these exotic materaials. If you're not
going racing; then, Sta-Set X gives the best bang for the buck in your
running rigging.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
