Richard:
See the homepage for the place that posted the pictures. See the short
intro on the Web Site. Anchor line tangled in motor? Why the anchor line
down?

The breaker looks to be around 6 feet. The offshore swells are short of 2
feet. The fact that they are regular and so evident under the otherwise
calm conditions led me to conclude that they were the product of an
off-shore storm.

These conditions are not a bit unusual for ocean sailing and can actually be
enjoyable. I have been in 8/10 foot swells in a 19 foot boat in Block
Island Sound with no feeling of anxiety at all.

< It looks like the guy made many mistakes. >

I think he ran the boat to close to shore. Entirely unnecessary. When
making a costal passage it's best to be at least a 1/4 to 1/2 mile off
shore. At even that short distance the wind blows at a more constant
velocity and the danger of encountering a shoal in small boat is minimal. I
know several blue water sailors who when making a costal passage who prefer
to drop the shore below their horizon for exactly the same reason.

In a new boat with minimal danger of a breakdown it's folly to get so close
to the shore. To many that advice seems counter-intuitive but I am sure
any relatively experienced sailor will agree with this. If you don't trust
your equipment you should not be there at all!

> Hopefully the damage is not to bad.>

Fiberglass boats are tough and the beach is sandy and pretty flat, I doubt
if it amounted to much more then cosmetic. Looking at the photos again I
think he may have dumped unto the hard following the broach and got swept up
by the next couple of breakers. The parts at risk were the rudder and the
possibility of the engine remained running without oil in the sump and/or no
cooling.
