[Rhodes22-list] Mark ? about new virus ?

Norton has worked for me. Like others, I dump a lot of the overhead, and allow it to update daily.

I like Bullet Proof Software to get rid of junk.

I use GoToMyComputer to deal with the travelling computer and backup problems. It has an easy (but slow) file transfer system if you need something you left behind. I use my high speed cable modem at home to surf the web, even when I'm on the road. My on the road connection is almost always slower than my home connection, but all it has to do is look at the screen at home. I put all new stuff on the home computer and back up every time I think I'd hate to lose something.

I use Nero to back up onto 20 cent CDs. There is no excuse for losing work.

I like Bob Skinner's back up system and will start using it right away. I have both Partition Magic and Drive Copy, but have not used them this way. I also use System Commander to put multiple systems onto a single hard drive.

I only buy software that comes on disks so I can rebuild a system when (not if) it crashes.

The system has been very solid. I back up the critical files from the at home system to the on the road system every time I go on the road--which is roughly the same number of times you go on the road.

In the past 10 years I think I have lost 1/2 day of work due to computer crashes. Of course it takes longer than that to set up the system again, but the new system is always better than the old, so I don't consider that time lost.

willingness to spend now and dump all the cost in our

Rhodies,

A few weeks ago when Bill and I were, uh, sharing
thoughts, I picked up some nasty
spyware/pest/virus/etc. that McCaffe, Spybot, and
Ad-Aware couldn't eliminate. On the recommendation of
a co-worker, I downloaded Norton System Works which
included the Norton anti-virus program (and disabled
McCaffe). Norton "fixed" the problem but the System
Works ate up a lot of memory and really slowed down
the laptop. A few days later, I ran some Norton
programs and the system crashed. After several
attempts I got it to re-boot only to have it crash on
another Norton program. Finally it died because the
operating system was corrupted. IBM replaced the hard
drive under warranty but I had to fork over the cash
to reload Windows XP (the machine didn't come with the
discs). After some research on the net with my
desktop, it seems that this is a re-occuring problem
with Norton. Has anyone on the list had this problem
or do any of you computer gurus have an explanation?
Right now I'm kind of anti-Norton.

I'm back to McCaffe only and so far no problems.
Maybe it was just Bill!
