[Rhodes22-list] Bill W attaching Whisker Poles

Thought I'd get into this discussion, just a little late.

Mine is not by any means the best answer, but it is an answer and there
isn't much reason for anyone to have a working pole if you take this
approach.

The previous owner of my boat got whisker pole ends and epoxied and
pop-riveted them onto the ends of an aluminum tube. I think the tube is the
same type of tube as the GBI (OEM) genoa furler tube. It looks like he used
the Forespar pole ends: WM part #111740, Forespar part #300024
It looks like it is the same thing as the small boat pole without the
tubing.

I use it as both a spinnaker pole (for which it was intended, I think) and a
whisker pole. No, it isn't adjustable. No, the plastic ends aren't as
strong as some. Yes, storage is a bit of an issue because it won't collapse
and fit under the cockpit seats (I keep mine fastened in place to the front
of the mast). But, it appears to be quite strong and I'm sure cost very
little. It does a much better job keeping the genoa in position than I
could do without the pole. I added a topping lift (the block is just below
my steaming light) and use just a simple ring for attachment (just about
even with the gooseneck in the up position).

If Dorene still has the old KY lake pics from 2001 somewhere (I just went to
picturetrail and couldn't find them) you could even see a picture of me
climbing the mast to run the topping lift.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Thanks Bob. That certainly gives me a lower cost alternative. Have you
used it in anything other than light air conditions? Also, do you have the
T-track that Roger is talking about, or do you just use a padeye?

Bill W.

Bill, This year I purchased one of the smallest whisker poles that sailnet
offered. It is plenty sufficient plus it is light enough where you won't
need to mess with at topping lift. The only reason I would go with a
larger
pole was if I planned to run a spinnaker. If you just want to keep the
Genny full off the wind it is perfect. Hopefully the link works

You will noitice the price jumps up quite a bit as you start to get into
more serious poles.
