[Rhodes22-list] GPS Map 76 battery issue

Wally, the "house" power is a conundrum. I have a 1 year old battery. I
could not tell you brand or output (deep cycle). I suspect that the solor
charger is either overcharging it or not working. I am leaning toward
overcharging since I will have power next week when I go out. It just has
less and less staying power. I bought a thing a madig that goes between the
charger and battery to prevent overcharging. I have not installed it yet
but hope that will fix my problem when I buy the next battery. When I
bought the boat I asked Stan whether I needed a two battery setup and he did
not think so. The maximum load occures when I spend the night. I will sail
with nav lights, Vhf, Stereo, and GPS or CD Player plugged into the 12V for
a few hours. At dock I will have the house lights, stereo on. Lately I
know it is bed time when the house lights dim so much that I can no longer
read. The next day I would leave off all power until I absolutely need
music. I will get the same results the following night. I have a handheld
VHF for backup and I guess I could avoid sailing at night but I refuse to
sail with out music. Any advice is appreciated. As far as the GPS, I get
about 1 1/2 sails out of a set of disposable batteries, not the 12 hours
they advertise. Bob
