[Rhodes22-list] Storm sails reference by Bob

Bob:

Thank you for the article reference. This part shows that Stan's innovation
of the IMF is an important part of the solution to heavy weather sailing:

"The main objective when shortening down in heavy weather is to keep the
boat balanced and making reasonable and safe headway. To balance the rig,
you need to reduce the size of the sails fore and aft in roughly equal
increments. The reason is twofold. First, a balanced rig will be the most
efficient rig. Sailing with a headsail alone, as some sailors do, will give
the boat a heavy lee helm that will make steering tiresome and will slow
your headway. And, secondly, the sails themselves, even when reefed down,
provide a shock absorbing affect for the rig. As the boat pounds through the
waves, or falls off the face of the waves, the jarring to the rig can cause
swagings and turnbuckles to fail. This is particularly true if the mainsail
has been furled completely. It is far safer to keep small patches of sail
aloft, on both the main and the head stay, to help the rig absorb the shock
of high seas and jarring motions."

This promotes the infinitely balanceable IMF and roller genoa sails of the
R22. The second article promotes a separate storm jib. Those who have the
UPS setup, probably could use the block and deck attach point for such a
sail. Have you tried the system that attaches a storm sail around the
furrowed Genoa? Is that an acceptable alternative?

Say it isn't so! You must be joshing us.

Furl the genoa, add a solent stay, hank
on a storm jib, and you will be good for
at least another 10 knots, maybe a full gale.

Could be a bit damp, however...

Thanks for the account of your day,
