[Rhodes22-list] Weekend on the water

Just an update.
The winds finally went down to a manageable 18-20mph on Saturday, so we
reefed the main, put out about 50% of the genny, and sailed from our marina
over to the island and back. Didn't see any critters (Aplysia) to collect
though. I am happy to admit, in my new role as rail-meat (my wife now will
not relegate the boat to me at all), may have solved my autopilot dilemma
until I can save enough to buy that early (hopefully) Christmas
present!....I just hope she stays infatuated with it till then.

Sunday I journeyed out to the Gulf of Mexico continental shelf break, some
60 miles offshore with a friend (obviously not on Le Menagerie, or a
sailboat for that matter) to gather some oceanographic data (and do a bit
of fishing). Seas were running 6-7' with a close period, so we took a
little beating. Water depth was between 60-260 fathoms, and the sea surface
temp was still almost 82 degrees (f). Much activity out there, spotted
dolphin, flying fish, sharks and other critters. Brought back some water
samples which I am analyzing for plankton diversity and productivity. We
also managed to catch 16 red snapper (between 4 folks)averaging better than
5lb apiece. Being out there gave me big boat fever again, but I'll get over
it. Am going to try and sail this afternoon after work...days will be
getting too short soon.
