[Rhodes22-list]Mary Lou- ICW currents

Mary Lou,
My experience is in northeast Florida and adjacent Georgia. The ICW
runs behind barrier islands. The Islands are 8, 10 or so miles long. There
is a lot of marsh behind the islands. Offhand I would say the tide is about
2 feet. When the tides goes out it drains the marsh and it goes out thru
the ICW to the ocean. At about the midpoint of the islands, the current is
more than you can sail against unless you have a perfect wind. If you have
the wrong wind and have to motor, it is like trying to go up a swift river.

With a light wind, say 4 to 5 mph, you go backwards without the
motor. It is interesting to be under sail, knowing that you are sailing,
but going backwards. Sometimes guest do not comprehend and start
complaining, thinking that they will land up in the middle of the Atlantic.
If you watch tides, it is not a big problem. However, if you are
taking others for a sail at 1 pm, then you may have to fight the tide. The
8 hp motor does fine.

Ed,
What kind of tidal currents do they see along the ICW?

Most of what we see in the Cheasapeake is 1-2 knots except for the infamous
narrows - Kent & Knapps - both of whch are spanned by drawbridges. 4+ knots
can be seen in those spots. We've been really glad for the 8hp when making
a turn across a tidal current sweeping us toward a still closed drawbridge.
Also helpful when docking in a strong crosswind or when motoring into
strong wind and waves on the nose. The rest of the time something smaller
would do.
