Agree with Michael here,

In our country, it isn't the total overall popular vote that matters. It 
is the total vote in each state that decides who wins each state. The 
states then cast their electoral votes to finally decide the election. 
So, it is very possible to have fewer total overall votes and still win 
the election, since some states have larger populations than others.

It has always been done this way. Don't know why everyone has so much 
trouble understanding it.

Or ...  maybe they only like the rules when it benefits them. :-)
