Steve,

I served 20 years in Uncle Sams Army and I strongly disagree with your
definition of a conscientious objector. To be a conscientious
objector, often times takes more courage than to be a soldier. A true
conscientious objector follows his convictions and declines to fight
for moral reasons and must be respected for "sticking to his guns".

Someone who chooses not to fight for purely selfish reasons or out of
fear, could be considered a coward. But a true conscientious
objector? No, they are not a coward.
