I grew up sailing the Hudson River from Catskill to NYC on a gaff rigged
sloop (36') no motor....it is the one of the most beautiful sails from NYC
to Albany...if you have done it you know it, and if anyone wants any tips
just let me know...the Palisades, Haverstraw Bay, the Highlands, past West
Point, Newburgh Bay, the Catskill Mtns, it really is like sailing along the
Rhine River...it can be narrow in places, wide in others, lighthouses all
the way north- many that can be toured now- and beyond Albany you can do the
canal to the Great Lakes....maybe others on this list have done this voyage
already...

our "Eleanor" gaff rigged sloop sailed from 1953- 2000. I was a week old
when I first was aboard and went with my folks out of Catskill Creek.

anyway the NY Times article and your interest got me going...

today however we are happy to say we handled our Rhodes 22 on the Raritan
Bay with winds about 15 knots or more, I did have a hard time sailing upwind
on our return, and my daughter (10) was not too keen on a lot of heeling-
I was afraid to get too much sail power out there so we remained on the low
side for sail power, but reading an earlier message maybe we should have let
more sail out...

we just have to learn how to trim the sails better. anyway it was a good
first sail...my daughter loves being at dock on the boat, says she would
just like to live there....this is a good sign.

It is our hope to sail from NYC to Hudson NY maybe next year aboard Whisper.
