Perhaps in Spain, but as used in the graphic arts the word is Italian, and
translates literally into English as "bright-dark" or, more smoothly, "light
and shadow". The corresponding word in Spanish is "claroscuro", from the
words "clar" and "oscuro".

To the extent that chiaroscuro "is used to give two-dimensional art the
illusion of a three-dimensional form" the word is appropriate to some
threads of this forum.
