Richard:
Plastic or nylon wire/cable ties deteriorate with weather, ultra
violet light and just time. They will fail without warning.
Stainless Steel Cotter Rings are currently the safest. Captain Bob
Keller found a new product discussed last year on this list. He and the
Rummy know what they are. Probably the same ones that Bill W is discussing.
The rings cause the least chafing to sails and lines. Many of us
also use covers of various materials to reduce chafing of lines and sails
over turnbuckles, fittings and cotter rings. Plastic pvc plumbing pipe works
well. Because of its thickness to fit over fittings it increases windage.
However, they save sails and lines, just ask the sage of Edenton.

Are you just using them on the turnbuckles or on the entire rig? Cable ties
are made of nylon. It's soft and cuts very easily. I guess they are OK for
the turnbuckles but I would have reservations about using them on the
shrouds at the chain plates and the fore/aft stays.
