[Rhodes22-list] Outer Banks Sea Trials

Ed,

Man, I sure wish I could take a couple of weeks. I am considering this an
exploratory trip to see where I might want to go back and spend some
leisure time. I will be spending four full days out there, and realize
that my plans are a bit ambitious; especially the leg between Cape Lookout
to Ocracoke. I understand that it takes around 7-8 hrs. to travel from
Oriental to Cape Lookout, and about the same between Oriental and Ocracoke.
It's the leg between Cape Lookout and Ocracoke that is iffy. Unless the
wind, current and waves are just right I won't attempt, but rather just
stay down around Beaufort. There are just a lot of options and great
looking cruising areas...at least looking at the charts.

I am as familiar as one can be short of having been there. I have bought
and studied Young's Guidebook and Charts of the area, and corresponded with
several locals that frequent the area.

My crew selection is not my wife and kids, but rather an old college buddy
that is always up for an adventure. My ultimate plan is to bring them back
for a week long trip next year.

Bill W.

Bill:
Congratulations, you are making a trip that I always want to.
I
have been to all the places that you mentioned, unfortunately not with a
sailboat.
How many weeks are you planning to take on this trip? There
is no
way that you can do all that in less than four days, unless this is non
stop.
I cannot remember who did it or if they are still around, but
the
lower part of the trip has been done. Are you familiar with the marinas,
ICW, the way out to Cape Lookout, the channel between the banks and
Atlantic? I have been to the area several times, just last fall to
Beaufort.
I think that your sailing buddy in Tennessee, Wally is
familiar with
the area. Going to the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
When are you going to do this?

I have experience in coastal cruising on charter boats over 40' in the San
Juan Islands and Florida Keys areas. I live in Knoxville and sail on Ft.
Loudon Lake (part of the Tennessee River system).

Do you have any experience sailing in salt water? How long have you had
the
boat? Where do you regularly sail?
