Dear Phylis My boat is anchored in Beacon and I belong to the Beacon Sloop Club. It is part of the Clear Water conservation group started by Pete Seger (famous folk singer from the Weavers and champion of the good fight) He built two 19th century lumber sloops The Clearwater and the Woody Guthry. Both vessels give free rides to the public and focus on keeping the river clean . They have been very successful since inception about 1975. I removed both furling systems almost right away. I did not have IMF but my main was on a roller set up like the headsail. I wanted to be able to raise the mast on my own so I eliminated all unnecessary weight. The mast is quite light with only the stays hanging down and can easily be lifted from the bow towards the stern when pivoted on the step. I don't know if hanked on sails perform that much beter on a R22 but in theory there is less drag and weight and I think more control over the sail shape and I believe there in lies the edge. Both sails have a cord running down the luff that can be adjusted to get the best sail shape. Is Catskill Creek near Catskill NY? It sure sounds familier or it may be not to far from me. Where in NJ are you and where do you sail? Sincerly Frank Nutters. From: P&M Beals <beals at rci.rutgers.edu>

Hello. I was just going through email and saw this note...
sounds great.

May I ask do you have a traditional mainsail or the IMF?

I bought a 1986 last summer with IMF, and I just feel that this boat will
sail even better with a traditional mainsail...

I hope you can give me a reply.

By the way, where on the Hudson do you sail?
Haverstraw Bay?

I used to sail out of Catskill Creek, Catskill on my father's gaff rigged
wooden sloop...this smaller fiberglass boat is a new experience for me, but
I am trying to hang in there with it.

Thanks again.
