Ed,

I just looked up gaff in the dictionary and you are correct.  The word gaff
refers to the pole or piece of sailboat rigging.  The word I intended to use
is spelled gaffe; but, the e on the end is silent.  To commit a gaffe means
to make a mistake or a blunder.  Up until tonight, I did not realise the two
words were spelled differently.  Thank you for pointing out my mistake.
