Good ideas - back in the '60's - as established by JFK and continued under
LBJ - when the draft was still a reality and the Vietnam war was on, there
were two other avenues of national service - the Peace Corps and VISTA
(Volunteers in Service to America), requiring commitments of one to two years. This
service did not preclude one from being drafted later, but did provide a
deferment. There was still a sense of idealism and hope that everyone's lot would
be improved, rather than the self-centeredness that seems to pervade the US
today. The 60's had their own problems, but a bit of its idealism would be a
welcome change today.
