Rummy,

We all carry Department of Defense ID cards for
military charters but when Gulf War 1 started we were
advised not to dead-head internationally with them so
we wouldn't be mis-identified as soldiers. Huh? When
I lived in Nashville and had my boat in a dry county,
I used the DOD card to get beer on Sundays at the
local VFW and AmVets clubs. They'd ask if I was a
member and I'd flash my DOD card (which clearly
identifies me as a civilian). It always worked.

A significant number of our guys have gone to FFDO
school which allows them to carry firearms. I would
guess about 20% of our crewmembers now pack heat, with
the numbers increasing every month. The paperwork,
training, and follow-on procedures are a major PITA so
I haven't bothered, YET! Actually, the real value may
be having your weapon along for the drive to the
airport.
