I disagree, leave the sails on, cover the boat with a tarp and you are
done.

Rummy,
 If you're going to store the boat for the winter you should remove the
sails so that you preserve the sunshade. It, too, will break down
eventually. Taking the sails off is not a big deal and if the boat is not
going to be sailed for several months, it makes sense.
